Out of Whack

A phrase we sometimes hear, especially from people who are new to chiropractic is, “I think I’m out of whack.” Of course no one would want to be “out of whack,” but just what does that mean?
Taken literally, the concern about being, out of whack suggests that a person’s goal is to be, in whack. Yes, I know this is beginning to sound silly, but words are such an important communication tool that we really should think about what our words really mean. So let’s take another look at the word, whack.
Here’s how the dictionary defines whack: “to strike with a smart, resounding blow.” However that’s not the only possible meaning. The British might use the word, whack to indicate taking a try at something as in, I took a whack at it. In organized crime the word gets an altogether different usage since to them, whack means murder. The Dictionary of Computing distinguishes between “hacker” and “whacker” in that a hacker explores the details of programmable systems in order to stretch their capabilities, while a whacker just goes in and messes up everything.
The Etymology Dictionary sheds light on the origin of the phrase, out of whack as a 19th century slang meaning for, “a share or just portion.” Perhaps this usage being related to measurement gets us closer to what people have in mind when they think of being out of whack.
All of this is interesting, but we know that when people tell their chiropractor that they are out of whack they know that something is wrong and they are interested in getting it right. We also know that they don’t wish to get whacked! Instead they want a precise spinal adjustment. Why do we say precise? Simple, the spinal column is very important because it protects our central nerve system, the main cable in the communication network of the body. It’s what the brain uses to control and coordinate the function of the body.

The brain stem is protected by the 1st neck vertebra

The brain stem protected by the 1st neck vertebra

A spinal analysis shows whether the spinal bones (vertebrae) are effectively protecting your nerve system. If we find a subluxation (when a spinal bone is misaligned it can insult the nerve system instead of protecting it), then we know that the person needs an adjustment. To get rid of the nerve interference a precise adjustment corrects the position of a vertebra so it stops insulting the nerve system. Now one might ask why precision is important.

Precision
To a football player, throwing a ball a quarter inch off target can change the outcome of a whole season’s work, or a player’s entire career. To an engineer designing a bridge, optical lens, an electrical circuit, a dam, or most any other structure, precision is a way of life. Think of how a lapidarist (a person who works on shaping, cutting and finishing diamonds) applies their art and science. Would precise placement be important? diamondCouldn’t the lapidarist just whack at it with a hammer? Perhaps some do, but to get a predictable, worthwhile outcome many factors must be considered. Size, shape, symmetry, color, weight, proportion, cleavage technique and how it will be polished; these and many other variable factors are all taken into account in the planning of the work. Does all of this precision really matter? Well, in the case of the diamond the difference can mean many thousands of dollars in just one single stone.
The spinal column is intricately designed to protect our central nerve system with each vertebra exactly sized and shaped to surround and shield the spinal cord and the nerves that branch off from it. However, if a vertebra gets into a wrong position that protective shield can become an insult to the nerve system, distorting essential communications within the body. It’s called subluxation and even small amounts of pressure on nerves can have far-reaching effects on function. Correcting these subluxations is so important to a person’s well-being that it shouldn’t be taken casually. That’s why a careful analysis is required to determine when interference is present and when an adjustment is needed a precise technique will take numerous variables into account. When a diamond is cut, faceted, shaped and finally polished to perfection they call it “brillianteering” to bring out the shimmering life of the stone. A parallel thought is what happens when interference is eliminated from a person’s nerve system. It also allows for the life within the body to spring forth and express itself.
The brillianteering of a diamond is carefully planned and the outcome is predictable. Similarly a chiropractic adjustment calls for precision and predictable outcomes. No, the lapidarist can’t just whack at the stone and expect perfection, nor can a chiropractor just whack at a vertebra.

Upper Cervical
Many of our practice members have been referred to us seeking specific upper cervical care. Exacting upper cervical care has become well-known because so many extraordinaryDrBrown_logo small things have happened to improve the lives of people receiving this type of chiropractic care.
The reason for this is that the top of the neck (referred to as upper cervical) is both important and unique. A person’s head sits right on top of the first neck vertebra. That spinal bone not only holds up the weight of the head but more importantly it protects the brain stem at the beginning of the spinal cord. A subluxation at that level of the spine can be the most insulting to the central nerve system because of the presence of the brain stem and all of the functional centers affected there. Since the entire communication network of the body must pass through the upper cervical area; and because the shape and movement of the upper neck is different than other parts of the spinal column, dealing with that area is complex. This is why a doctor of chiropractic would seek special training and skills focused on precise upper cervical analysis and adjusting. There are even some doctors who focus exclusively on the upper cervical region. When we do a spinal analysis we always look carefully at that crucial upper part of the neck.
Precise spinal analysis and adjusting skills is the pinnacle of achievement for a chiropractor and no area of our professional care demands more of these competencies than does the upper cervical spine. It is difficult to think of anything done in health care that compares in value to a proper spinal analysis; and when that analysis reveals subluxation the ability to perform a precise adjustment is vital. Come to think of it, chiropractic done at a high level is just about the opposite in meaning to the whacky expression that began this discussion.

Clichés

We adults often take pause to chuckle at how much we find ourselves sounding like our parents, especially considering what they sounded like to us when we were the “younger generation.” Expressions like, “Is it the holiday season again, already?” and “Time flies when you’re having fun” sound trite and suggest that perhaps we don’t have anything better to say or lack imagination. But there is another possible side to the use of clichés, could it be that they just happen to fit the situation so very well?
For example, here we are in Thanksgiving week and I feel just a little self-conscious as I wish a “Happy Thanksgiving” to each practice member as he or she is preparing to leave the office today. It’s not any lack of sincerity, just the repetitive, almost obligatory sound of it. thankfulI sometimes wonder about that kind of thing when you pass someone on the street who asks, “How are you?” without pausing for or slowing down long enough to possibly receive a response. Do we just feel obliged to make the inquiry without wanting a response, as if failure to do so is a snub or slight? It seems strange that we have such tangled, complex social behaviors, doesn’t it? Yet there is a distinct difference between the insincere cliché that fits a certain hollow circumstance and the meaningful, heartfelt wishes that an appreciative moment of Thanksgiving brings.
I’m sure that many others have had these thoughts and while they even border on being tired expressions themselves, it seems useful to mention it because our words can be powerful things and perhaps we should pause occasionally to think about them. From that spirit please accept these wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.
Due to holiday travel, office hours will be shortened this week:
Monday 8:30-5:00 Tuesday 1:00-8:00 Wednesday 8:30-5:00

Retreat to Rock Hill

On Friday the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation Board hosted its annual retreat. At first I wasn’t too excited about the idea of missing most of the day at the office in order to do volunteer work, but it turns out that it was really a worthwhile thing to do.

I’ve been serving on this non-profit board for a few years now and it’s been great to be able get to know these people, who are without a doubt, leaders sharing a common vision. http://rockhillusa.com/ Much of the retreat was concerned with exploring more ways that the community can accelerate the already rapidly unfolding progress that Rock Hill has been seeing.

Downtown Fountain Park

Downtown Fountain Park

We heard a report from consultants who have looked at the progress of the community, compared it with other outstanding locations around the country and reviewed perceptions about Rock Hill. What they told us is that their study revealed that the quality of life in Rock Hill is excellent and really great things have been happening here. They also told us that perceptions haven’t kept pace with progress. It was also interesting to learn that the lag time in awareness is both internal and external, i.e. many people living here are still uninformed about some rather exciting developments.

Just last night I watched the Carolina Panthers game on Monday Night Football and along with millions of other people I heard the sportscasters discuss what a great community Rock Hill, South Carolina is. They showed a photo of an event depicting Panthers team members with high school football players from Rock Hill. What impressed me though was after they went back into the play by play a while later the announcer returned to the subject of Rock Hill and acknowledged it as a fine community, that was only 20 miles from Charlotte and had excellent football programs. This is just one of many examples of how Rock Hill is becoming acknowledged as a fine place to live and work.
Imagine if you were trying to choose a place to live and you saw this list of attributes:
• A vibrant city, large enough to have many amenities with no traffic or parking problems.
• About 30 minutes from one of the busiest international airports in the country.
• Known regionally, nationally and internationally as a first-class amateur sports destination.
• Historic sites, arts and cultural attractions http://www.visitrockhillsc.com/things-to-do/arts-attractions/
• A center for cycling, including a state-of-the-art Velodrome; and a Supercross track, which has been selected as the site of the 2017 BMX World Championships http://www.visitrockhillsc.com/things-to-do/sports-recreation/
• Has an excellent 70-acre soccer complex.
• Has a long list of first class amateur sports venues including golf and a regulation tennis center – member of the United States Tennis Association; also has a championship disc golf course.
• Abundant outdoor lifestyle activities locally; premier softball/baseball facilities; a short drive to the mountains and ocean beaches within about 3 hours of the beach.
• A business-friendly environment with a diverse, technologically sophisticated workforce.
• All of the cultural advantages of one of the fastest growing cities in the Southeast United States within 30 minutes’ drive.
• Features Knowledge Park, a new model where the best of cutting edge technology is put to work for transformational outcomes in business and education. A highly regarded university, a technical college and a community college partner with the City, schools and the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation blending public and private resources in the planning of Knowledge Park. All of these and many other elements, too numerous to mention in a short blog are among the many reasons that I am thankful to be a part of this fine community.

I really didn’t say everything I said

Yesterday heaven welcomed its newest citizen, Yogi Berra. Upon hearing news about the passing of this 90 year-old icon, I couldn’t help but reflect back to my own childhood when I faithfully watched every Yankees baseball game I possibly could.
Yogi was a symbol of excellence and much else that really matters in life. As a teammate of greats like, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Roger Marris, and Whitey Ford, to name a few, Yogi’s number 8 was never overshadowed by any these other superstars as he won the hearts of people both inside and outside of baseball. Although a member of the baseball Hall of Fame and holder of numerous MVP awards, Berra may ultimately be better known for his wit and wisdom, especially his unique way to express a thought. In fact, he even had his own brand of articulation referred to as a “Yogism” (pronounced yogi-ism) and defined as, stating truth in a humorous manner.
He’s the one who said, “When you get to a fork in the road, take it.” And, “It ain’t over ’till it’s over.” Known to be good natured, Yogi put others at ease with his unpretentious persona. He once had the opportunity to meet the Pope. While most would correctly greet him with, “Your Holiness,” “Most Holy Father,” or “Holy Father,” when Yogi approached the Pontiff, who spoke first with, “Hello Yogi,” he responded with a simple, “Hello Pope.” Similarly my father, Samuel Brown met Yogi once in a large chain store in New Jersey. Yogi was behind a table promoting the soft drink, Yoo-hoo. Yoohoo My father felt at ease enough to walk up to the man with his hand outstretched and say, “Why it’s Yogala Berrala!” Unoffended, Yogi warmly reached his hand out to the stranger and greeted dad just like he might an old friend. By all reports that’s just the kind of man he was.
For your reading enjoyment and to his honor, here are just a few of my favorite Yogisms:
Giving baseball advice: “You can’t think and hit at the same time.” And, “Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”
Also: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”
“A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.” And of course, “It’s deja vu all over again!”
“When you come to a fork in the road take it.”
Finally, when speaking of his expressions Yogi said, “I really didn’t say everything I said.”

Play room gets makeover

I’m glad to see that Charlene’s artistic side keeps on coming through. Our office benefited from it again this week when she brought in 6 youth-sized chairs that she had decorated especially for the play area.
The chairs, originally manufactured in Hickory, NC by the Southern Desk Co., are of heavy, solid oak and feel like they could stand up to a lot and it appears that they already had. Charlene obtained them at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore (http://www.habitat.org/env/restores.aspx). They had certainly seen better days but the chairs were so well built that she decided to give them a new lease on life. We like going to find treasures like this in the ReStore because it’s fun and the money we spend there goes to a most worthy cause.

With a thorough cleaning and hours of sanding she brought them back to a situation she could work with. She chose the ones with the nicest looking wood grain to have translucent chalk paint. Those are the ones that have the solid color in the “after” photo. Then the two that needed the most effort were given multi-color paint and she even added detailed pictures on the seats. Those required infinite patience and a lot of work by hand.
Not to leave any work unfinished, Charlene then touched up the paint on the play room walls and brought in some colorful new shelving for the toys, books and puzzles. Now the whole room looks just great! We know that lots of kids seem to enjoy the play room and we want them to think of their chiropractic experience as a healthy family event and something fun to look forward to.

Children benefit the most from chiropractic care because it provides an opportunity that many adults never had, the chance to grow up free of the vertebral subluxations. The obvious benefit is that they get the chance to express more of their own potentials. Having a welcoming place, sized just for kids, helps to give them the message that “This is for you, not just grown-ups and certainly not just for people with back aches.”

How’s your back feel today?

That’s what Jane and her daughter, Jenny (names changed) heard during our conversation when a mother and daughter were having their chiropractic visit this morning. I did ask a question of Jenny but in actuality I asked, “How’s it going?” just like one might inquire, “What’s new?” Seeking clarification, Jenny responded, “You mean, how’s my back feel?” My response was, “Oh no, I meant how’s your life?” After a puzzled silence I soon added, “As your chiropractor I’m not interested in your back at all.” Both mother and daughter began to laugh in wonderment that their chiropractor would give such an apparently outlandish response. Following up with more clarification again, “Sure, as a chiropractor the only reason I look at your spine is that it protects your nerve system, so that makes my work about your life, not your back.” Jane said, “Well that’s profound and refreshing.”
We all learned in school that the brain controls and coordinates all functions of the human body. Yet it seems that most of us forget just how basic, simple and profound that truth is. For example, when some part of the body isn’t working well we fail to think in terms of where normal function comes from. Instead we try to artificially stimulate or inhibit function – usually with drugs. Aside from the fact that medications are dangerous, our culture is in too big of a hurry to shoot from the hip with dangerous chemicals instead of helping the body to heal itself. But to get back to the point, the human body is a wonderfully built organism designed to heal itself when sick and moreover to function in health. Jane knew that this was true and she was aware of how her whole body functioned better under chiropractic care, nevertheless she hadn’t thought about the link between good nerve supply and a good life. “It all makes so much sense,” she said.
While they were being checked for subluxation to see if they needed adjustments we chatted more about it. Usually Jane would only schedule a visit if her back hurt and she pointed out how much better it always felt after she got adjusted. So I said, “That’s really great, but remember feeling better is the least important thing we do! Remember getting an adjustment is like getting life turned on in your body.” Jenny said, “Whoa…”

American Originals

Next week is our country’s annual 4th of July celebration. More than just recognizing Independence Day, it provides a good moment for reflection and a chance to think about and appreciate what the United States stands for. It shouldn’t be a time to promote blind United States Flagnationalism, which was flatly rejected by our founding fathers. Instead they devoted themselves to certain principles that were so fundamental that they described them as self-evident truths. Indeed, our country was created to express the idea of basic equality of all people.
Of course we’re not perfect and we haven’t always expressed our values well. Even as this article is being written a debate rages nationally over whether the presence of the Confederate flag at the South Carolina State House flies in the face of this basic American core value. We could also easily find other inconsistencies between our values and reality. Yet achieving perfection isn’t what makes the country great, nearly as much as our constant striving to live up to the ideals. Holocaust survivor (Buchenwald), and Nobel Prize winning author, Elie Wiesel said it best in his Independence Day column published on July 4, 2004,“America understands that a nation is great not because its economy is flourishing or its army is invincible but because its ideals are loftier” (Parade Magazine, “The America I Love,” Wiesel, Elie, July 4, 2004)
Striving to reach our ideals and setting our sights higher is perhaps the most important characteristic of the American spirit. This spirit can be seen and felt in the many ways like when a decade of deep commitment led to the first steps on the moon. That same spirit has spawned countless great inventions and innovations and my own profession was one of those great American discoveries.
In 1895 the United States of America gave birth to the chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa when Harvey Lillard, a deaf man regained his hearing. Throughout 17 years of suffering the best of medical care continuously failed to help him. Then he visited a different kind of doctor. D.D. Palmer examined him and performed the first chiropractic adjustment in history on Harvey Lillard’s neck. His almost miraculous recovery shed light on an entirely different way of understanding where health comes from in the human body. American Originals 3.1
What followed was a colorful history of trials and tribulations as chiropractic gradually became a profession despite vicious opposition from the American Medical Association and allied groups who saw chiropractic as a competitive threat. Nevertheless, the public demanded what chiropractic provides and gradually it became recognized for what it brings to people’s lives. Finally in 1991 the United States Supreme Court upheld the U.S. Court of Appeals that found the American Medical Association guilty of an illegal conspiracy to eliminate chiropractic as a competitive art. Today more and more enlightened physicians are referring patients to chiropractors and of course availing themselves of the benefits of specific chiropractic adjustments.
Now chiropractic, an American Original, is at the forefront of an imminent transformation in how we view life and health.

Rock Hill’s Knowledge Park

About 6 ½ years ago we chose Rock Hill among many fine places we could have gone to locate our practice in South Carolina.
It was a time when the local and national economies were going over the cliff. The unprecedented and unexpected crash was having an impact on nearly everyone and gloom and doom forecasts were everywhere. Wall Street, the banking system and the economic experts had all let us down and the government was stepping in to bail out the big offenders while people were wondering how they were going to hold it all together for their families.
Since then people have weathered the blow, the administration in Washington has changed and slowly but surely the economy has been recovering. As a member of the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation Board I have been fascinated to watch the tone change. You could even see it in the eyes of the movers and shakers of the community. Yes, they were worried, but they took positive steps to turn it around. To its great credit, Rock Hill has continuously moved forward, always with an eye to the future.
Now the winds of progress are being felt like a refreshing warm breeze arriving in the community. One great example is the development of the Knowledge Park, a centerpiece of it all. Stretching from downtown’s historic, “Old Town” on through the old Bleachery site up to the Winthrop University area, the Knowledge Park is an innovative, technologically diverse new model of progress built with an eye to the future and with sustainability in mind. What’s in a name?

When we were first putting together a website for the office one of the first things we had to do was to come up with a domain name. We quickly learned that a domain name has multiple functions. More than just a website address, it’s also a way to carry a message. For example, “cars.com” is an address that also tells us that it’s a website for buying, selling, financing and getting lots of information about cars. Similarly, “tennis.com” brings one to a magazine site loaded with information about racquets, courts, tournaments, players, rankings and most anything tennis.
With this knowledge in hand it seemed like this was a really important decision. Then we learned that a lot of the clever and easy to remember website address names were already taken. So we decided to focus on creating a web name that carried some meaning. That’s how we came up with, “YouNeedChiro.com.” Perhaps when some people first see “YouNeedChiro” they might wonder if it’s true, or how we can be so sure. Well, the answer to that is simple – everyone is better off with good nerve supply connecting the brain with all of the other body parts. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence demonstrates that the brain controls and coordinates all functions of the body and that a network of nerves carries vital information from the brain to every other body part. Precise adjustments help rid the body of interference with this essential life-sustaining communication.new logo small file
This brings us to the real idea behind our web name. People often seek our care because something doesn’t feel right, but a careful adjustment is much more than pain relief or treatment for a condition. Even though people tell us that they feel better, the adjustment does so much more. It eliminates interference; and family chiropractic care can be a life-changing experience when babies, children, adults and the elderly are empowered to function at their best. So the truth of the matter is in the name, people really need this.
Our mission: to strive to bring the highest quality chiropractic care to people of all ages.
Our values: gentle, precise adjustments based on careful analysis; provided sustainably and affordably in an open environment based on the individual’s clinical needs.

Project Connect reaches out to many

Over the past 6 years we have participated in Project Connect. This annual event started in 2009 when the Leadership York County teamed up with the Catawba Area Coalition for the Homeless in an effort to reach out to homeless and otherwise underserved persons in the area. Since then the event has grown and includes a number of additional civic and volunteer groups and also partners with the City of Rock Hill’s Weed & Seed program.
This year’s Project Connect was held on April 11th at the Emmett Scott Recreation Center here in Rock Hill.

Built in the early 1930s, Emmett Scott Center was originally a segregated High School for African-American students. Now the site serves as one of the City of Rock Hill’s parks.
Emmett Scott Center
Services provided at this year’s “Day of Caring” event included clothing and food distribution, legal aid, veterans support, medical screenings, haircuts, financial counseling, voter registration, job placement and of course, chiropractic care. Joining me in providing care was Dr. Rhonda Werner, a colleague who also practices in Rock Hill. Over 600 people attended making the event a success by most any standard of measure. Initial plans for next year’s Project Connect have begun with an April 9, 2016 date.
