Research documents safety & effectiveness of chiropractic

Appearing on the front page of the on-line magazine, “The Natural Health Resource” today is an article reporting on the findings of research in which chiropractic adjustments were found to be safe and effective.

Citing a study which appears in the latest issue of “The Cochrane Library,” the article focuses on cases of low back pain and notes that patients with this symptom are frequently treated with pain medications, with many side effects and concerns about their tendency to be addictive, or physical therapy, which is expensive and time consuming. In view of the poor record of ordinary medical care, the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for these patients is like a breath of fresh air. Chiropractic adjustments seem like an especially good alternative when considering the observation of Dr. Roger Chou, a physician and researcher with Oregon Health & Science University, “…most treatments for lower-back pain “aren’t all that effective…” (same article).

Dr. Syney Rubinstein at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam was the lead author in the study which included 26 studies involving more than 6,000 participants. http://www.findalternativehealth.org/hot-off-the-press/260-research-shows-chriropractic-care-as-effective-as-pain-killers-other-treatments

Although the university researchers were considering adjustments as an “alternative treatment,” it is essential to realize that chiropractic is not an alternative to anything else. Actually everyone should see their chiropractor to improve their performance whether or not they have pain. Chiropractic improves quality of life and it’s not just an alternative for people worried about being harmed by medicine. Providing chiropractic for your family is simply good hygiene.

It’s also important to remember that these researchers only looked at the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for low back pain. Getting adjusted certainly seems like a much better approach than ordinary medical care, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Improving nerve supply through chiropractic does so much more than make us feel better; it allows us to function better.

Project Connect held, many people helped

Homeless people were provided with many services and information on Saturday (January 29th) at the Emmett Scott Center here in Rock Hill. This was the 4th time in the past 2 years that the Catawba Area Coalition for the Homeless and a number of related area agencies pulled together the event, which included much needed services like haircuts, chiropractic care, clothing, medical screenings and food.

I am on the board of the Catawba Area Coalition for the Homeless and I have participated in this event each time it has been held. This time my Rock Hill colleagues, Dr. Rhonda Werner, and Dr. Chenier Neely also participated, providing chiropractic care without charge to those attending the event.

The rewards to us were on the faces of the people we adjusted that day and I feel privileged to have been involved. I feel thankful indeed.

Children Benefit from Adjustments

Thousands of children receive the benefits of chiropractic care, but thousands of others do not have the advantages chiropractic offers kids because their parents don’t know that all children should be checked by the family chiropractor.  To make matters worse, ordinary doctors lack understanding about this most important part of a child’s preventive health needs.  Typical of the problem is the well-meaning pediatrician who appears on the following television news clip.  Unfortunately ordinary doctors are not trained to understand that chiropractic for children is not only safe, but essential for their good health.  In the following link it is interesting to see how the mother learned the value of an adjustment while the doctor she previously trusted, only spread fear and misinformation:  Click here to see this enlightening clip on an NBC affiliate.

Toastmasters

In my practice we focus on helping people express more of their potential through chiropractic adjustments.  In my private life I try to make good choices too, and one of those involves improving my communication skills.

Becoming a member of Toastmasters has been a great step in achieving that goal and I am fortunate to be a member of one of the oldest and finest clubs.  We are in the middle of a year of observance as the Rock Hill Toastmasters Club is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in the community.

Toastmasters Proclamation by Rock Hill Mayor Echols

It is my honor to serve as the club’s president this year, in which we organized several special events commemorating the club’s golden anniversary.  It began with an Official Proclamation by Rock Hill Mayor, Doug Echols; then a picnic at Cherry Park, with guests from the other area Toastmasters Clubs who participated in a humorous speech contest; and the capstone event was a free Effective Listening Workshop held at Rock Hill City Hall for the community.  The master of ceremonies for the workshop was Lucas McFadden, CN2 News Anchor.

It’s been a busy and fun year for this organization, but we’ve got more to come.  Next Tuesday, January 18th will be a special guest meeting where the focus is to invite folks in to see what Toastmasters is like.  So if you have ever been curious about it, please join us at 7:00 p.m.  We meet at the Westminster Towers rehab building.  For directions and more details please click on our club website: http://rockhill.freetoasthost.us/   Toastmasters International Logo

Can you use a speaker for your organization?  The Rock Hill Toastmasters Club has a number of talented individuals who are enjoy doing presentations.   For more information contact Linda Robinson, Vice President for Public Relations: lindarobinson@comporium.net  Also, I speak before groups both nationally and internationally.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly about a presentation for your group or organization: drbrown@youneedchiro.com

Adjustments During Pregnancy

Key Questions:  “Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?”  and “Why would I want adjustments during pregnancy?”
These are really important questions to ask because ordinary doctors and obstetricians are not trained about the importance of chiropractic care for a pregnant woman.  Owing to that lack of understanding, the physician may tend to actually discourage a woman from getting the care she and her baby deserve.

Many women have reported that delivery was more comfortable owing to their chiropractic adjustments and that they adapted better to their many bodily changes during the pregnancy. This is understandable when we remember that the purpose of chiropractic is improved nerve system function.
Your chiropractor is trained to modify both the equipment and the adjusting procedures to safely, comfortably and effectively adapt to the pregnant woman’s changing needs throughout the pregnancy. Yes, safety and effectiveness are essential, especially during pregnancy; yet the key thing to remember is that a pregnant woman needs chiropractic care more than at any other time in her life. This is true because both her function and that of her baby’s depend upon good nerve supply flowing through the mother’s body.  Click here for studies providing more information.
One other important consideration is this. After the baby is born we recommend that both the new mom and baby stop here to get checked on the way home. That way any subluxations caused during labor and delivery can be identified and corrected – a great start for a newborn and his/her mom.  Click here for more information about safety and effectiveness of adjustments for children and pregnant women.

Winter Wonderland

It’s Monday morning and the office opened an hour late today due to the weather. All the area schools are closed, so is Winthrop University, so my wife Charlene has the day off, too. We don’t get much of this sort of thing here in South Carolina, so I thought I would take a quick picture for you, from the front window of the office.

A Healthier You in the New Year

A healthier, happier life, what could be better as we move into the new year than that?  Perhaps the best place to start is at the beginning, with our basic function.  Functioning well, first and foremost, is the basis for our health and an essential element in happiness.

As a chiropractor I see the evidence of this truth every day in the people I work with.  Yet many people go through life experiencing mediocre health and never receiving the benefits of chiropractic care.  We tend to believe that we have the best technology and that our health care providers know what’s best for us. But the reality is that we live in a time when health care itself is in crisis.

Unfortunately the answer doesn’t seem to be coming from spending more.  In the United States we spend far more on health care than people in other countries, yet our health outcomes are deteriorating.  It may be that we need to examine some of our basic attitudes and beliefs about health.  This is underscored by a recent study that looked at people who had spinal surgery compared with those who received safer, conservative care.  The estimates vary, but we know that more than 250,000 patients have discectomy (a type of spinal surgery) annually and thousands of other types of spinal surgery.  The study suggests that many of these would not be necessary if appropriate conservative treatment was provided.

The study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed that 60% of a group of patients with a particular diagnosis of sciatica (with pain radiating from low back down into leg) who underwent chiropractic care reported a successful outcome.  This suggests that only 40% of the group actually needed surgery.  Another way of looking at the data is that chiropractic care saved 60% of these patients from needless surgery.  http://www.uschirodirectory.com/index.php/patient-information/item/281-sciatica-leg-pain-a-lumbar-disc-herniation-surgery-vs-chiropractic-care-

This is common and we chiropractors see evidence of this regularly in our practices.  But the real message is that we need to take control of our health as consumers; avoid dangerous medications; and get checked regularly by our chiropractor (don’t wait for something to hurt). http://www.youneedchiro.com/joomla/healthy
