Got Positivity?

This is a healthy tidbit from our in-office weekly newsletter:
It’s not enough just to know it’s important, it takes some practice. Most of us spent years cutting ourselves down at every opportunity and we can turn it around, but it takes time and effort. Like exercising, it takes more than a week’s worth of activity to turn us from a couch potato into someone who’s fit. But it can be done if you give it time. Like exercise, to gain & maintain results, we must keep it up. That’s where Positive Affirmations help: We reprogram the brain by feeding in positive thoughts over & over again. Try this: Every time negative thoughts come in say, “I like myself” out loud, 10 times in a row. This may feel really weird, at first. Eventually it becomes less weird, then normal, and then you start to believe it.

Note: The best part is that this becomes our truth.

Invitation to teach seminar in Japan

Saying a few words at the party

I have accepted an invitation to teach a seminar in Tokyo, Japan on the weekend of September 10th. My last seminar in Japan was in 2008 and at that time I taught a group of approximately 80 doctors along with Dr. Joe Strauss and Dr. Perry Rush. Charlene accompanied me and after the seminar we all took a delightful trip to Mt. Fuji where we enjoyed beautiful scenery, great food and fellowship. Here a couple of photos from that trip:
We are currently planning the content for the seminar this September. Joining me at the podium will be Dr. Carl Gillman, of West Liberty, Iowa. I have known Dr. Gillman for many years and he is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Sherman College and currently a member of the International Agency for Chiropractic Evaluation.

Stepping Out of the Health Care Crisis

Sterling House on Ebenezer Rd. in Rock Hill invited me to speak to their “Lunch & Learn” group on Tuesday afternoon, April 12th.  My topic was, “Stepping Out of the Health Care Crisis.”  It is an hour-long presentation on safety, performance and the health care crisis.  The presentation included a special focus on how individuals can “step out” of the health care crisis while becoming healthier.  The ideas discussed included taking proactive steps, how to live safely, avoiding dangerous drugs and better performance.  We had a nice interactive discussion and everyone had a chance to participate.  Geri Tucker, Sales and Marketing Manager for Sterling House was our host.  She provided a warm, friendly atmosphere and delicious cookies for all in attendance.

I welcome outside speaking invitations and I am happy to accept invitations to speak before your local groups or organizations without charge.  To see a list of topics that I have recently presented please click this link: www.youneedchiro.com/joomla/dr-brown-as-a-guest-speaker

Eat Wholesome Foods

This is a big deal, but I wonder how much we really pay attention to it. We know that a “Golden Arches” approach to nutrition is the formula for disaster, yet what we do in our culture seems to say we just don’t believe what we already know. Perhaps it’s that we get so wrapped up in our hurried lifestyle that it’s easier to run through a drive up window than properly nourish our body. So today’s entry into the WeBlog is simply a reminder about how much wholesome nutrition really does matter. Fast food drive through
I saw a young mother feed her baby Kool-Aid™ in a bottle and wondered how anyone could be so out of touch with what’s wholesome. Forget the insult of the high sugar content, did she really think that the dyes and many chemicals found in that beverage were OK for an infant? Of course not, probably she just wanted to make the baby happy in the easiest way, but I think that had she looked at the label and considered what is in there, she would more likely visualize a skull and crossbones rather than a brightly colored sweet beverage in a bottle. Considering this example, we may think that she was just a terrible mother, but we really need to look at what  put in our kid’s and our own bodies.
When we go to the grocery store do we read the labels? Some of us may say, “Well, I’m just not a chemist, so why should I read that list of additives and preservatives?” That’s the point my friends. If you can’t read the label and know what’s in your food, then there’s a simple answer, don’t buy it! This may sound a little radical, but do you really have that much faith in Kraft, Tyson, Con Agra and the like? It would be a true act of faith to believe that these companies wouldn’t put anything harmful into foods to improve profits. Keep in mind that the food conglomerates are currently fighting against your right to know which foods they sell with genetically modified ingredients. However, you can have faith in one principle, the giant food distributors will listen carefully if we stop buying chemically and genetically altered foods.

Chiropractic, for a better life?

Seeing a large, colorful poster in the front room of a busy chiropractor’s office made an impression on me, so I thought I’d share it with you here.  It read, “Chiropractic, it’s not about your back; it’s not about your pain; it’s about your life!”  I knew that people often report feeling better after getting an adjustment,  but it turns out that feeling good was only the tip of the iceberg.  In fact when we adjust your spine, we’re not trying to change how you feel; instead we’re correcting a problem that interferes with the function of the body.  A precise adjustment corrects interference in the nerve system and that has implications to function throughout the body.  Here’s a great case in point.

The following excerpt from a letter documents the first chiropractic adjustment in history.  Written by Harvey Lillard (circa May, 1896),

Harvey Lillard, received first adjustment

it was later published as testimony of the case by Dr. D.D. Palmer in the January,1897 issue of his newsletter, “The Chiropractic.” Mr. Lillard didn’t have a back pain but when he received an adjustment he regained his hearing after 17 years of deafness!  Eight months after the September 18, 1895 adjustment he verified that he could still hear well after only two neck adjustments.

“I was deaf 17 years and I expected to always remain so, for I had doctored a great deal without any benefit. I had long ago made up my mind to not take any more ear treatments, for it did me no good.  Last January Dr. Palmer told me that my deafness came from an injury in my spine. This was new to me; but it is a fact that my back was injured at the time I went deaf. Dr. Palmer treated me on the spine; in two treatments I could hear quite well. That was eight months ago.  My hearing remains good. – HARVEY LILLARD, 320 W. Eleventh St., Davenport, Iowa”

So next time you visit your chiropractor, remember it’s about much more than how your feeling, it’s about your expression of life!  For more information about this interesting history, click: http://www.youneedchiro.com/joomla/publications (click on the 2nd article in the list of publications, “Old Dad Chiro, His Thoughts, Words and Deeds.”)

Obesity, Self-esteem, and Bullying

Bullying has made news again this week as millions of us saw a video of underdog Australian schoolboy, Casey Heynes, turning the tables on a bully.  The network news first warned us that the video was disturbing and it certainly was.  Some watched gleefully to see justice served, while others viewed in abject horror as the boy body-slammed his bully to the concrete.  The bully clearly ‘buttered his own bread,’ but at the same time we know that the boy, driven beyond the breaking point by years of bullying came right to the brink of tragedy by his own severe response.

Along with Barry Rubinstien, Vice Chair of the No Room for Racism Committee, I will be appearing on the radio talk show, “Straight Talk” on WRHI FM 94.3 and AM 1340 this Friday at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the work of the committee and the upcoming Youth Forum.  Please tune in and let us know what you think.  The office will be close from 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday to allow time for this event.

There have been many recent examples of the fact that bullying has become a major social problem globally, including teenage suicides in the U.S.   For several months now the City of Rock Hill’s, No Room for Racism Committee has been planning a program to help shed light on this “elephant in the room,” as the Committee’s Annual Youth Forum will focus on “Obesity, Self-esteem, and Bullying” this Thursday, March 31st at 5:30 p.m.

City of Rock HillThere will be lots of food, fun and information.  Admission is free and families with school age children are encouraged to attend.  Information about these important subjects will be available for the kids and their families.

Please arrive by 5:30 at the rotunda of the Rock Hill City Hall and plan to have lots of fun.

Health and Safety Presentation

The office was closed on Wednesday morning so I could do presentations on safety to groups of employees of the City of Rock Hill.  Held in two sessions to accommodate both groups, the presenations focused on preventing injuries.  A study of the costs and other impacts of injuries reveals that the leading experts in the field all seem to agree that the best way to avoid injury is to begin with a healthy body, because a weakened individuals are far more prone to injury.

This led us to a discussion of the importance of adjustments, beginning in early childhood.  Building a strong healthy body is no accident (pun intended), it’s built by living a healthy lifestyle, which begins in infancy.

As free public service I welcome speaking invitations and will accept invitations to speak before your group or organization without charge.  To see a list of topics that I have recently presented before other groups, please click the link below: http://www.youneedchiro.com/joomla/dr-brown-as-a-guest-speaker
