Eat Smart Move More South Carolina

I’ve just joined the network called, “Eat Smart Move More” SC. This group is working to enhance the health of people through healthy habits and wholesome eating. From their website, here are 7 great tips:
1. Rethink your drink (Before picking up that can of soda, think about replacing it with something your body needs, like water, milk or 100% fruit juice!)
2 Right size your portions (When it comes to portion sizes, bigger is not always better)!
3 Tame the tube (By turning off the tv, you can decrease your child’s risk for becoming overweight, and spend more “quality time” together as a family).
4 Move more everyday (Getting enough physical activity can be achieved by simply moving your body).
5 Eat more healthy meals at home (Eating Smart at home is not as hard as you think – it can even save you time and money)!
6 Eat more fruits and vegetables (Work on making colorful fruits and vegetables a substantial part of your diet every day).
7 Breastfeed your baby (There are countless benefits to breastfeeding your baby, both for you and your newborn).

Juneteenth is this Sunday

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The celebration observes that on June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery. Note that this event took place 2 years after Lincoln’s proclamation took effect in 1863! It’s sad and somewhat amazing to think that people remained in bondage for two additional years, not even knowing that they were free.
The City of Rock Hill’s, “No Room for Racism” Commmittee will be serving as greeters this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. for the Juneteenth service at Mt. Prospect Church, 339 West Black St., Rock Hill, SC. See you there.

Question Answered

I received this question in an E-mail today. I thought that others might be interested in this subject, so the question and answer are copied below (the person’s name is omitted). This person has anxiety and panic attacks and asks if adjustments will help that condition.
Answer:
Chiropractic benefits people by correcting interference that can occur in the body’s central nerve system.
The brain is responsible to control and coordinate the function of the body and it uses a vast network of nerves, like a wiring system, to communicate with the various cells, tissues and organs of the body. The spinal cord is the main “cable” that carries messages from the brain through the movable bones of the spinal column. Those bones are intended to protect the nerves passing through them. However, if one of those bones gets misaligned it can have just the opposite effect. Instead of protecting the nerve system, a misaligned vertebra can become an insult to the spinal cord and nerves passing through it.
The scientific name for this circumstance is, “vertebral subluxation.” The resultant nerve interference can disturb function in ways that are both predictable and unpredictable. But either way, a vertebral subluxation is damaging to the performance of the body. Simply put, a subluxation in the spine interferes with the function of the body.
Since communication between the brain and other body parts is essential to regulate body chemistry, deleterious effects are inevitable, while remaining difficult to forecast. When a chiropractor identifies a vertebra in a subluxated situation, he or she will endeavor to correct the subluxation, not to treat any particular condition or disease, but because good nerve supply is essential to the function of the body.
To address your question most specifically, I would not offer chiropractic adjustments to treat anxiety, panic attacks or any other condition. Yet an important question needs to be asked. Who needs a good nerve supply more than someone who is experiencing anxiety and panic attacks? Precise chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxation allow for better performance. In my practice experience patients have reported positive changes in many conditions that were not predictable, yet through the correction of vertebral subluxation, they observed pleasing improvements in many facets of their family’s health and performance. So the right answer to this question is that chiropractic is not for treating conditions, but to improve function. Every family member benefits from improved nerve system function. I would recommend finding a chiropractor who can provide a precise spinal analysis and adjustment of vertebral subluxations.

Dandelions, more than an annoying weed

It’s early Sunday morning and I’m waiting for enough of the neighborhood to show signs of being awake so I can get out and mow the lawn before it gets too hot. As I reflect on the chore and other lawns on the block, it brings to mind a home about a block away with such a lush, well-manicured lawn that one couldn’t find a weed anywhere.
That made me remember a short article Joy sent for this week’s, “Your Healthy Tidbits.” It is all about the health promoting value of the dandelion. Far from being a nasty nuisance, the dandelion can be a great part of a salad!

dandelion leaves

The health benefits of the dandelion are many. One of the main benefits is it helps in maintaining bone health, skin care & weight loss. Dandelion is rich in calcium, which is essential for the growth & strength of bones, and it is rich in antioxidants like vitamin-C & Luteolin, which protect bones from age related damages due to free radicals, such as weakening & loss in bone density (Source: OrganicFacts.net). So perhaps next time we’re thinking about nuking the lawn, we might reconsider the value of that healthy little portion for our salad plate!
