An American Discovery

It’s the 4th of July and Independence Day is a good time to reflect on our many blessings and privileges. As a chiropractor this is particularly meaningful to me because the United States of America was the birthplace of the chiropractic profession. It began as an important discovery taking place in Davenport, Iowa, when Harvey Lillard, a deaf man, regained his hearing after having a precise spinal adjustment. Chiropractic is gradually becoming recognized for what it brings to people’s lives and it is at the forefront of an imminent transformation in how we view life and health.
This stands in sharp contrast to the fierce opposition and attacks chiropractors faced in the early 1900’s by entrenched medical power brokers. Chiropractic was discovered at a time when the medical arts were undergoing severe criticism for practices based on superstitious and outdated ideas. The practice of medicine had not yet advanced beyond bloodletting, itinerant salesmen with snake oils and toxic patent medicines. It was difficult for the public to tell the charlatans and swindlers from the sincere physicians. Medical associations found it useful to deflect attention away from their own shortcomings by attacking outsiders, especially chiropractors who were helping many people who failed to get well under medical care. As a competitive science, chiropractors found themselves an easy target for the long established, but troubled medical profession.
Under pressure from medical groups, thousands of chiropractors were arrested and served jail time. What was their crime? They were guilty of helping people when medicine was claiming a monopoly over the business of health care. The political oppression nearly wiped out the fledgling chiropractic profession. Patients picketed jails demanding that their doctors be released and gradually states enacted chiropractic practice acts. This colorful history included many fascinating stories of personal tragedy and triumph. For the story of one chiropractor, Dr. Herbert Ross Reaver, who was arrested 12 times, click on this link: http://theatlasoflife.com/2010/03/30/going-to-jail-for-the-principle-dr-herbert-ross-reaver/
Like the country that gave it birth, chiropractors and patients had to fight for their right to freedom and the pursuit of a better life.

A great gift

I don’t generally go around endorsing products, but I feel motivated to share this with my readers.
For the past couple of years I have been wearing my favorite tie chain, a gift from my daughter, Arianna. Then on a recent trip to Washington, DC it vanished. I try not to be materialistic, but I wear a tie every day and I really liked that tie chain. It was a particularly functional accessory because as a chiropractor I am often bending forward to lift a patient’s head and neck while checking them to see if they need an adjustment. I never wear a clinic jacket because they’re too medical looking and simply don’t belong in a chiropractor’s office; but a dress shirt and tie give a clean, professional look and do just fine. That tie chain used to comfortably keep the tie from falling on and dragging over the patient’s face. Now I admit that it was a small thing, but I really liked that tie chain because of it’s elegant simplicity and one feature in particular. It has a unique “sure snap” clasp that doesn’t fall off the shirt button the way others do. Since I wear a tie in the office every day, I really appreciated that little accessory.
For all these reasons I was just delighted when my daughter sent me two new (one gold and one silver) Aniksdal “Sure-Snap” tie chains for Father’s Day! So for my colleagues or friends that wear a neck tie, here’s a great source: Aniksdal.com

Your help wanted

I’m told that we need some of the people that have experienced our care in practice to rate or review how I did for them. This is supposed to make it easier for people searching the Internet to find me. If you have a minute, please click here, go to the site and enter your comments where it says, “Write a review” near the lower right-hand side of the page. Or, go the Google Maps site and click in the blue “Write a review” box near the upper right-hand side of the page. Many Thanks!

Allergies rates soaring in children

It seems that the “Health Care Crisis” affects much more than just who has money or insurance, in fact it goes much farther than money issues. The irony is that in the United States we spend far more than other countries on health care and seem to get less and less in the way of results.
A report on NPR this morning sounds the alarm about a dramatic increase in allergies in children. The report reveals that many of the things that we have been told to do to keep kids healthy may actually be a part of the problem. The report stated that “Allergies are on the rise these days, especially in children. Nearly half of all kids are now allergic to something, be it food, animals, or plants. Federal health officials say that rate is two to five times higher than it was 30 years ago.” The report also cited a fascinating research study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, which found that Amish children living on farms, working around dusty, dirty conditions and drinking raw milk had very low rates of allergies.
A well-referenced article on the benefits of raw milk notes that a certain chemical, conjugated linoleic acid, which is abundantly available in raw milk, “…strengthens the immune system and lowers food allergy reactions.” Click this link to have a look: http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/raw_milk_health_benefits.html.
Perhaps we need to reconsider our sterile, medicated way of life and introduce our kids to healthier, safer, more natural methods.

Giving voice to your potential

In chiropractic practice we focus on helping people express more of their innate potentials through precise adjustments. In my private life I try to make good choices too, and one of those involves improving communication and leadership skills.
Becoming a member of Toastmasters has been a great step in achieving that goal and I am fortunate to be a member of one of the oldest and finest clubs. The Rock Hill Toastmasters Club is now in its 51st year serving this community.

It is my honor to be now serving as the club’s Past President. This year has been busy and fun. The club has just completed its sponsorship of a Communication & Leadership course for high school age students, which included the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. Our Vice President of Membership, Ms. Shauntae Jordan, CC (CC means “Competent Communicator” in Toastmasters speak!) co-coordinated the course along with me. Two weeks ago these fine young people completed their academic year in the course and actually ran a complete meeting of the Rock Hill Toastmasters club where they received the certificates of completion and gave their own acknowledgments and appreciation to the organization.
We always love to invite folks in to see what Toastmasters is like. So if you have ever been curious about it, please join us any 1st or 3rd Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. We meet at the Westminster Towers rehab building. For directions and more details please click on our club website: http://rockhill.toastmastersclubs.org
Would you like to have a speaker come in and do a presentation for your organization? The Rock Hill Toastmasters Club has a number of talented individuals who enjoy doing presentations. For more information contact Charlotte Hogue, Vice President for Public Relations: vppr-2040@toastmastersclubs.org
I am also available to speak before groups both nationally and internationally. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly about a presentation for your group or organization: drbrown@youneedchiro.com

Chiropractors meet in Atlanta

Visit with Al Sharpton

On Saturday I traveled to Atlanta to participate with many of my professional colleagues in a discussion about the quality and growth of the chiropractic profession. A key concern on our agenda was the high cost of a chiropractic education and the relevance of the curriculum in chiropractic institutions. Our goal is to be certain that a vertebral subluxation correction service is available to future generations. I invite all persons interested in securing the highest quality chiropractic service for our children and grandchildren to please visit the Coalition for the Advancement of Chiropractic at VSfree.org and click “sign this document” at the bottom of the page.
A special unexpected treat came at lunch time when we had a chance to visit with former presidential candidate, civil rights activist and radio show host, the Reverend Al Sharpton. In the photo, from left to right are Dr. Thom Gelardi, Reverend Al Sharpton, Dr. Brett Casanova and myself. (photo courtesy of Dr. Brett Casanova)

Another study about blood pressure and precise adjustments

A new study released in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research finds blood pressure improvements after patients received precise chiropractic care. What was most interesting about the findings is that not only did patients with high blood pressure come down, but it was also learned that people with abnormally low pressure tended to move toward normal after receiving precise upper cervical chiropractic care.
Authored by Dr. Scott Torns, the article, “Atlas Vertebra Realignment and Arterial Blood Pressure Regulation in 42 Subjects” appeared last month (Issue 2 ~ April 24, 2012 ~ Pages 40-45). This is not the first research study to show dramatic blood pressure improvements in patients receiving precise chiropractic care. A prominent researcher, George Bakris, MD, Director of the University of Chicago Hypertension Center led another study involving upper cervical chiropractic with similar exciting results for patients with high blood pressure. Dr. Bakris added encouraging news about the safety and effectiveness of precise chiropractic care, “And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems.” An article about that study is available at WebMD®.
It is important to note that not all chiropractors are trained in precise upper cervical chiropractic techniques. It is a growing area of interest and I believe that careful upper cervical analysis is one of the most important aspects of my practice.

Should people with anxiety & panic attacks get adjustments?

I was asked this question on All Experts.com: Can chiropractic help anxiety & panic attacks? Here is the answer I gave:
Dear Vern,
Chiropractic benefits people by correcting interference that can occur in the body’s central nerve system.
The brain is responsible to control and coordinate the function of the body and it uses a vast network of nerves, like a wiring system, to communicate with the various cells, tissues and organs of the body. The spinal cord is the main “cable” that carries messages from the brain through the movable bones of the spinal column. Those bones are intended to protect the nerves passing through them. However, if one of those bones gets misaligned it can have just the opposite effect. Instead of protecting the nerve system, a misaligned vertebra can become an insult to the spinal cord and nerves passing through it.
The scientific name for this circumstance is, “vertebral subluxation.” The resultant nerve interference can disturb function in ways that are both predictable and unpredictable. But either way, a vertebral subluxation is damaging to the performance of the body. Simply put, a subluxation in the spine interferes with the function of the body.
Since communication between the brain and other body parts is essential to regulate body chemistry, deleterious effects are inevitable, while remaining difficult to forecast. When a chiropractor identifies a vertebra in a subluxated situation, he or she will endeavor to correct the subluxation, not to treat any particular condition or disease, but because good nerve supply is essential to the function of the body.
To address your question most specifically, I would not offer chiropractic adjustments to treat anxiety, panic attacks or any other condition. Yet an important question needs to be asked. Who needs a good nerve supply more than someone who is experiencing anxiety and panic attacks? Precise chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxation allow for better performance. In my practice experience patients have reported positive changes in many conditions that were not predictable, yet through the correction of vertebral subluxation, they observed pleasing improvements in many facets of their family’s health and performance. So the right answer to this question is that chiropractic is not for treating conditions, but to improve function. Every family member benefits from improved nerve system function. I would recommend finding a chiropractor who can provide a precise spinal analysis and adjustment of vertebral subluxations.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown

NBA star credits chiropractic

It wouldn’t be unusual for the Chicago Tribune to report that Derrick Rose posted 23 points, six assists, five rebounds and four turnovers in close to 35 minutes against any NBA opponent. But this particular report followed a game where the Bulls hosted Atlanta in Rose’s return after missing 5 consecutive games after being sidelined. In an interview the Chicago Bulls all-star point guard told ESPN’s Doris Burke, “the whole week I was seeing a great chiropractor.” Click here to see the Chicago Tribune story

Appreciative patients launch web site

James Tomasi credits a precise chiropractic adjustment in his upper neck with literally saving his life. He even wrote a book, What Time Tuesday? telling the personal details of his own story and how an eleventh hour life-saving adjustment meant the difference between life and death for him. Now James and his wife, Rhonda, have launched a new web site to explain how this is possible and to advocate for others who may similarly benefit. To hear it in James’ own words, please click: uppercervicaladvocates.com
