Congratulations to all who exercised their right to vote

We are all glad that the election is finally behind us. Many are pleased with the outcomes, while others not so much. Either way we all know that our politicians need to find a way to work together, despite their differences. I hope that they are listening on both sides of the aisle.
Now that President Obama is re-elected, it is noteworthy to point out how much he values chiropractic care. Here is what he says about chiropractic:

President Obama

“Doctors of chiropractic now make up over 60,000 licensed professionals in all fifty states, and care for millions of Americans every year. Almost a quarter of Iowans receive quality chiropractic care every year. As you know, chiropractic care is low-cost, drugfree, noninvasive, and has been shown to have a positive impact on patients’ health. ..
…I am glad to have this opportunity to again share my thoughts on the role doctors of chiropractic play in the American health care system. As I have said before, doctors of chiropractic play an important role in our health care system, and my commitment to you and your patients remains strong.
As I have said, I believe steps should be taken to acknowledge the important care provided by doctors of chiropractic. We need to knock down unreasonable barriers of access…” http://www.barackobama.com/

Appreciation

Many of my friends already know that my brother, Martin is also a chiropractor. Although he practices far from here in Northfield, New Jersey (close to Atlantic City), he has been instrumental in my own development as a chiropractor. More significantly he has cared for thousands of people directly adding years to life and life to years for those persons in his private practice. He was a co-founder of a chiropractic college and he, along with his wife, Joy has in many other ways influenced hundreds of young people who have subsequently decided to become chiropractors. Therefore, I think that it is reasonable to say that he has earned the right to be called one of the most prominent doctors of chiropractic.

Dr. Martin A. Brown

B.J. Palmer, the developer of the chiropractic profession often said, “We never know how far reaching something we may think, say or do today will affect the lives of millions tomorrow. It is far better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” My brother exemplifies this standard. Teacher Cadet Program Honored

On Wednesday Charlene and I attended the “Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award for Excellence” (in education) ceremony. The celebration was held in Columbia to present cash awards and trophies recognizing outstanding educational initiatives.
Richard Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education addressed the group via video to underscore the significance of the educational initiatives being recognized that afternoon.
Receiving top honors were Clemson University’s “Reading Recovery Training Center;” Furman University’s “Bridges to a Brighter Future;” and the “Teacher Cadet Program,” of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA), located on the campus of Winthrop University. Charlene and her Program Director, Marcella Wine-Snyder (holding the big check in the photo) oversee the Teacher Cadet Program, which includes 170 South Carolina high schools and college partners throughout the state. This successful South Carolina program has become the model for 33 other states. For more information please visit: http://www.teachercadets.com

Just for fun

Other than professional entertainers or newscasters, none of us seems to like to hear the sound of a recording of our own voice. I was recently humbled when a friend in Japan placed a video recording of myself and Dr. Thom Gelardi teaching a seminar to Japanese chiropractors many years ago. The seminar was held in Tokyo and we were teaching precise upper cervical chiropractic analysis and adjusting. It’s a little embarrassing to see that video as I think I am a much better teacher now, than I was then. Anyway, just for fun I thought that i would share it with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZDYpYC5xzY&feature=share

Happy birthday month

September is birthday month! No, not yours or mine; we’re celebrating the birth of a profession, chiropractic. The story of chiropractic’s birth is actually a colorful event. This important discovery took place in Davenport, Iowa, on September 18, 1895 when Harvey Lillard, an African-American entrepreneur had a rare, special encounter with Dr. D.D. Palmer.
It seems that Harvey ran a janitorial enterprise which provided service to the building where Palmer operated his infirmary.

Harvey Lillard, received first adjustment

One evening when Dr. Palmer was working late in his office Harvey entered to sweep the floors and became engaged in a very loud conversation with Palmer. It was very loud because Harvey was deaf and could only understand when Palmer shouted at the top of his lungs.
Dr. Palmer asked him how long he had been deaf and Mr. Lillard answered, “Over 17 years.” Palmer then asked Harvey why he was deaf and Mr. Lillard smiled answering, “It’s funny you should ask because I’ve been to all the doctors in Davenport and more of them over in Illinois, too. All of them tried to do different things in and around my ears to treat them. They all failed to help me, but none of them ever asked why I was deaf”. Palmer asked again, “Do you know what brought it on, Harvey?” Mr. Lillard said, “I don’t really know why I lost my hearing, but I know when it happened. “What exactly did happen?” Dr. Palmer asked. Harvey explained, “One day I was bent over in a corner scrubbing a floor with my brush and I felt a popping sound in my neck. It was immediately like someone put heavy mufflers over my ears and it kept on getting worse after that.” Palmer asked, “ and Harvey agreed. When Palmer examined the neck he noticed an unusual bump at the top of the neck, just below Harvey’s head. He touched the lump and Harvey winced in pain. He then asked, “How long has it been hurting?” Harvey answered, “I never noticed the hurt before you touched it! I don’t think anyone has ever touched me there before.” Dr. Palmer reasoned that if the tender lump came with the deafness, then perhaps reversing the bump could help with the problem and he asked, “Will you let me try to help you?” Harvey agreed and together they performed the first chiropractic adjustment. Dr. Palmer had Harvey lie face down on a bench and contacted the bump over the twisted vertebra with his hand, introduced a light quick movement. The vertebra shifted its position and Harvey noticed an immediate improvement. According to Mr. Lillard’ s letter documenting what happened, after having 3 adjustments over a couple of week’s period of time from Dr. Palmer he had his hearing completely restored.
With today’s scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology we can understand how a chiropractic adjustment could restore normal function to Harvey’s nerve system resulting in such a miraculous outcome. This is why it we say, “Chiropractic, it’s not about your back, it’s not about your pain, it’s about your life.”

Some of our best friends…

Noted chiropractic philosopher, Reggie Gold would often say, “If you’re not out to change the world, everything else is just Mickey Mouse.” That was his way of inspiring us to a greater vision.
I can also remember Reggie saying: “Friends don’t let friends stay subluxated!” It’s a fact, some of our best friends get subluxated.

What is chiropractic?

Simply stated, chiropractic is a way to improve a person’s whole life, not just their health. It does this without taking anything out of the body or putting anything in. That makes chiropractic much safer than most things done in health care.

It’s great for all kinds of people…Chiropractors correct a common, but sneaky problem in a person’s spine called, subluxation. A subluxated spinal bone is misaligned, so that it insults the nerve system. Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy. It’s the science of spinal subluxation. Locating and correcting subluxations is an art requiring precision and skill. It’s a contemporary health science based on the inherent ability of the body to self-regulate. This makes chiropractic a philosophy, whose purpose is to assist people to express more of their innate potentials.
The public demands safe and effective care and many of us have grown weary and wary of the dangers of a drug based medical system. We don’t offer chiropractic as an alternative to medicine; rather it is a way of improving function. An important side benefit is that chiropractic doesn’t put risky medications into the body. Then, when we begin to function more normally and naturally it’s like turning on the light in a dark room – the darkness just seems to go away. The following short video clip is an example of just that as we see a teenager who got her life back through chiropractic and was able to live without a medicated cloud hanging over her head: “ADHD high school student able to get off drugs and resume normal life.”click here, then please scroll to the bottom of the page.

What about sick people?

Whenever someone new becomes a part of my chiropractic practice it is our regular procedure to provide them with a report. The report explains what their spinal analysis revealed, as well as the objective of care in our practice.
Most people that are new come in with certain expectations about chiropractic – they usually think that our goal is to take away their pain. The interesting thing, that usually surprises them, is when we say that we will not do anything to cover up pain or treat any other conditions. Instead, we try to interest people in the real benefit of chiropractic care, reducing interference in the body’s nerve system. Precise chiropractic spinal analysis and adjustments correct spinal subluxations freeing up the body to do what it is already trying to do. We don’t put anything into the body or take anything out. Getting rid of interference is really that simple, but it makes a huge difference. Given a chance, it is amazing what the body is able to do.
One of the questions often asked when we do these reports for new people is this: “What if someone is sick, do you treat their illness with an adjustment?” The answer is always the same, “Chiropractic is what we do to function better. It is not a treatment for sickness, but people who are sick still deserve a good nerve supply.” Said in other words, “Who needs a good nerve supply more than a sick person?” That’s why everyone should be able to live their life as free of vertebral subluxation as possible.
Recently a Winthrop University student majoring in Health Care Management came under care here. She wanted to experience chiropractic and was happy to see her health improve and her overall performance in life enhanced after receiving a specific upper cervical adjustment. What really surprised her though was that her multiple sclerosis symptoms cleared up after beginning to receive precise chiropractic adjustments. Nothing was done to treat the MS – it simply illustrates that all people deserve to have their spines checked for subluxation and if they have a subluxation, then they deserve a precise adjustment – nothing less. The known, the unknown and the predictable

While teaching chiropractic seminars I meet many chiropractors and some of them write to me with questions. Today I received the following question from a chiropractor in Japan: “Today I have a question. I am seeing someone with varicosis around her knee. It is said that damaged venous valves will never be restored. Cannot damaged venous valves really be restored at all? Can the innate intelligence restore damaged venous valves? If you have an idea about a suggesting book or article, please let me know.”
I would like to share the answer I gave him with you: We never know exactly what the healing capacity of any particular organ or system will be in any particular patient. However, the body has remarkable abilities that science cannot reliably predict. As an example, I remember that when I was in college we were taught that it is a scientific fact that nerves and other highly specialized body tissues have no healing capacity at all. That arrogant assumption has subsequently been proven wrong and the scientific consensus is that nerve tissues do have certain healing potentials. Applied to the case at hand, we may not be able to know what the capacity of the person is to restore damaged venous valves. However, that lack of knowledge has no impact on our clinical decision making because the objective of that person’s care relates to a greater concern than just the damaged venous valves. The greater concern has to do with improving that individual’s ability to function.
When we approach a case such as the one you describe it is necessary to consider what is and what is not predictable. It is reliably predictable that if the person has vertebral subluxation (VS), then they have nerve interference, which diminishes their ability to function well. It is also predictable that if they keep their subluxation, then they will continue to have interference in their ability to function – and this includes interfering with their ability to heal. This predictable interference may include the known problem, with the venous valves, but it may also include other existing, yet unknown problems in other tissues and systems. Moreover, even in the absence of known and unknown conditions, the individual deserves the opportunity to live free of VS.
It is also predictable that a precise spinal analysis followed by a specific chiropractic spinal adjustment can correct the vertebral subluxation. This is clinically measurable and predictable; and it is verifiable by doing pre and post checks. It is also predictable that with correction of VS, the individual will express more of their innate potential. It will do so according to the priorities of the body; and the body innately knows what is in its own best interest. What remains unpredictable is if, how and when the symptomatic condition you asked about will change. Again it must be stated that our clinical decision making should be unaffected by the unpredictable, especially when there exists a compelling reason to continue doing predictable analysis and correction of the person’s vertebral subluxations. The predictable outcome is that the individual will express more of their life’s time free of the interference of vertebral subluxation.

A thousand points of light

A famous oft repeated line from the campaign speeches of former President, George H.W. Bush was, “A thousand points of light.” Although the Bush administration fell short of the ideal, the idea was a great one. It spoke to American values and in particular those timeless ones that involve people reaching out to people.

In chiropractic practice we receive many rewards that go well beyond the fees paid. Whether it’s the smiles on the faces of kids who just received their adjustment; or the individual who enthusiastically thanks us for “getting their life back,” these little moments of thanks shine brightly in the heart of every chiropractor I have spoken with on the subject.
Today one of those points of light warmed my heart because it was a genuine gift of appreciation whose intrinsic value was far less important than what it symbolized. When this fine woman arrived bearing this unsolicited gift today, it was more about the thought and less about the tomatoes. To top it off she added a beautiful rose, a symbol of her own inner beauty and light. To say I appreciate it hardly says much, but I certainly do.
