Kirby

The holiday season makes me think of and fondly remember Kirby.  He was under care in my practice in West Liberty, Iowa.  Kirby was one of those individuals who brightened up the room and was such a pleasure to see that the whole day seemed to improve with the arrival of that enthusiastic, little fella.  Now you may be wondering why I referred to Kirby as a little fella.  Well, no special reason, it’s just that Kirby is a dog who sure loved getting his adjustments.  We checked Kirby once-a-month in my Iowa practice, adjusting him when he needed it.
Actually it wasn’t even legal because my Iowa chiropractic license did not provide for adjusting animals.  Nevertheless, they need it and the moral imperative takes precedence over the regulatory stipulations.  No, I didn’t build a practice for animals; I simply adjusted them after the office was closed on Wednesday evenings. Kirby paid for his adjustments by having Sue bring chocolate chip cookies – it’s a special deal Kirby and I worked out together.   There were a few occasions when Sue came to the office without Kirby.  She would always tell me that on those days he would be very upset with her and behave indignantly for the rest of the evening.

Somehow he just knew if she had been there without him.  Strange, isn’t it?  He knew that he needed his adjustments and he loved his adjustments so much that I just loved him for it.  We left Iowa to move to South Carolina in 2002.  There are many fond memories that come from years of practice, and Kirby is high on the list.
